Why we love LED light therapy

What is Led light therapy?

 

LED stands for ‘light emitting diodes, they are basically coloured wavelengths of light that can penetrate the layers of the skin. These lights are being used by many professional facialists and aestheticians as they can have great and noticeable benefits to the skin! Benefits including, killing off acne causing bacteria, healing wounds and inflammation and stimulating collagen and elastin production. Light therapy was originally developed to speed up the healing process of post surgery scars, and it was just a happy accident that other great positive benefits to the skin were seen. There are many colours of LED light including yellow, green and amber but the most used colours are red, blue and infrared (which is not visible to the human eye). LED is completely safe (as long as goggles are worn) and can be used by all skin types and all ethnicities.

 

 

How does it work?

 

LED light therapy is administered mostly by a mask that sits on top of the face, but it can also be administered by a hand held device or a screen that can be manoeuvred to cover the face. The light energy penetrates the skin, this energy then enhances cellular metabolism which then stimulates the production of collagen and elastin, boosts circulation and speeds up tissue healing. LED light therapy can cause cells to regenerate themselves up to 200% faster than they would on their own, used regularly this can result in softening of fine lines, brightening of the skin and less breakouts and irritation. Skin will look healthier and happier.

 

 

What does it feel like?

 

LED light therapy is completely pain free, you’ll have no redness or no downtime after this treatment. It will just make your skin feel warm as it absorbs the light energy, feels a bit like sunbathing but without the harmful UV rays! It can also stimulate the same happy hormone ‘seratonin’ as the sun does. So not just skin benefits, it can be mood enhancing too! LED can be used for up to 30 minutes on each treatment. Skin should be completely clean and makeup free for best results, a serum can be added for an extra boost.

 

Which colours do what?

 

There are many colours of LED but the three below are the ones that are used most widely by professionals

 

Blue LED kills the acne causing bacteria so is great for people suffering from acne.

 

Red LED light stimulates collagen production, calms redness and inflammation, stimulates circulation and the lymphatic system

 

Infrared LED – this is the wavelength that is most deeply absorbed by the skin tissue. It is used for pain relief and healing, it increases cell permeability and absorption and just boosts the cells at a deeper layer

 

 

How often should I be using LED light?

 

LED light therapy is a great boost to a facial treatment and you can often see results after just one treatment, however for the most noticeable results it is advised to do a course of 2 treatments a week for 5 weeks then twice a month for maintenance. The more you do it the better the results.
